COURSE REFLECTION

           I did my website on the subject of clouds and how meteorologists use them to predict weather. I chose to do this topic because I knew a lot of information about clouds because I took a meteorology class at my Community College and loved it.  I also have a lot of pictures of clouds that would be great for examples of the subject material.  I also chose the topic of clouds because I want my audience whether it is surfers or seekers to know how to determine future weather conditions just by looks up at the sky.

            Doing the wix website was something different and unlike any assignment I had before. I liked doing the wix webpage because I got to not only put information that I knew very well into a webpage, but I was able to put pictures that I took so everybody can see them.  I take a lot of pictures and to have somebody see my work makes me happy.  I though making a website with the information from out research paper was a good idea and the whole assignment had a great creative side to it.  When we were done with the paper, we got to create a virtual paper with pictures and colors; however we wanted to design it. I was excited to do the paper and see how the website would turn out.  I was somewhat nervous because I was not familiar with the website wix, but I knew I was going to have to figure it out on my own and I would be okay.

            The design of my website has purples, pinks and blues as the background because the different colors complement each other nicely.  I chose black for the text so it was easier to read the material- that is very important.  Part of the website design was to see the information laid out in a website format, and if one is unable to decode the text, it is pointless to even put the text in there in the first place. I chose to put the menu of the different sub sections of the website at the top so it is easily accessible to whoever is viewing it. I chose to use the scroll bar in my text portions of my website because I did not want the reader to be overwhelmed of the amount of words in one text box; using the scroll bar would alleviate some of  the huge amount of words on each page.

            The pictures that I chose, all but two, were ones that I took myself using my own digital camera.  I like to take pictures as a hobby, and I was excited when I found out that I could put my picture taking skills to good use. The pictures I used were taken in New Jersey; Maryland; Florence, Italy; Pompeii, Italy; Paris, France; Versailles, France and London, England.

            One of the websites that we talked about in class to make sure our background colors worked together is called Color Scheme Design 3.  It is a color wheel online and it tells you which colors work together and which colors do not.  I thought it was a really helpful webpage to see which colors worked together and which did not. I will use that website for my other classes that require the me to make a website.

            I had no obstacles in doing the wix website.  I was able to figure out the features of the website just by playing around with the website.  I was able to make my website pretty, yet informative.  I used a pre-made template and made it my own.  When I was done with my website, I was able to help other people in the class with theirs.

Worst Websites

Bear Flag Wine- is what I consider a bad website.  The colors somewhat work together but it looks like a tattoo website not a wine website.  There is not scroll bar to go down, but to go over, I thought that was odd.  You have to click on the different pictures to go to the different parts of the website.  I thought that was odd too.  You have to scroll over to see more of the website, and normally you would not do that and it is hard to find the objects that you have to click on to go to another part of the website.

Hypertext thesis

The development of clouds is very important for predicting the weather around us.  If we know how clouds form and decide whether the clouds are high level clouds, middle level clouds or low level clouds, we will be better prepared for whatever mother nature throws at us.

Research Paper Proposal

My research paper/website is going to be on the topic of weather.  I will explain how clouds form, what different kinds of clouds are, claim that clouds are all around us not just in new jersey. I will also show many pictures, all of them being what I took.  I will make this assignment more creative by adding all pictures that I took of clouds.

I will use some books and weather related websites. I will show one picture that I did not take which will be a chart of the clouds and where they are in the atmosphere.

Reflection on the Wikipedia Entry

I decided to edit something I know a little bit of information about.  I added various restaurants to the Morris Plains Wikipedia Website. I thought anybody who looked at the Morris Plains Wikipedia site would like to know some restaurants in the area, if they are planning to visit there, live there, or just to drive through.  The first time I edited my post was on Feb 14^th, it got taken down on Feb 14^th. I posted again on Feb 16^th; I tried to post a revised version of the restaurants.  I had that edit taken down on February 17^th.

I felt that my post would stay up because it is useful for people who would like to know the names of some of the restaurants in Morris Plains, New Jersey.  The first time I posted my entry on February 14^th, I added some of what the restaurants served and a phone number for each one as well as a website.  On Feb 16th I checked the website to see if my post was still up and it was not.  I checked the history of the page and the person deleted my post because of advertising and linkspam.  On Feb 16th, I tried posting for the second time, I did not include phone numbers and what the restaurant serve.  I just had what the name of the restaurant is, where it is located, restaurant hours, and a website.  On February 17^th, the Wikipedia volunteers took down my edit because they considered it Restaurant Advertising.

The overall experience I felt was a good and bad.  I felt it was good because I learned how to edit a page.  The bad part of the experience was that a Wikipedia volunteer kept taking down my information because of advertising.  I realized why we had to do this assignment, if we did enough research; our post would be factual enough not to be taken down.  Although, I did a lot of research, my post was taken down.  So, I thought about this assignment more.  I came to my final conclusion of why we were asked to do this assignment.  Everything on Wikipedia is not fake, it may seem that way because of the wording.  The Wikipedia volunteers taking down my edits made me think, if there was fake information, they would take it down.  So Wikipedia is not necessarily a great source to get information, but it is not the worst either.   It all depends on who see’s and edits the post and what they think is necessary or not.

I could have chosen a different topic to do.  Like more information about a school district, or maybe a food Wikipedia entry.  I could have also named all of the restaurants in Morris Plains New Jersey, so the Wikipedia volunteers do not think I am bias.  I could have instead of putting a couple restaurants down, I could have posted or made a page about a specific restaurant in Morris Plains or I could have made my own post about a cupcake place down the road from me.

My plan of action would be to try my best to not be too bias and put up only a few restaurants.  I would do more research than I previously did.  I would also try to name all the restaurants in Morris Plains, well the ones that are open and ready for business.  I would try to not make it too long or too short. My final plan of action is to review what I have done and try to edit it the best I can so it does not look bias.

I feel this youtube clip is so true.  I feel that text is not just writing on paper, or texting on a phone. This video is a good indication of what we grew up with and what our kids will grow up doing. Adding links, posting on blogs, editing websites, posting pictures, updating locations, video chatting and so much more.  Website are now interactive.  You can type anything into Google and it will find it for you.  We will organize all of this data the way we want it organized. The world wide web is bring everybody together with just one click.

Proposal

Morris Plains Wikipedia site

This is the link I will be adding to.  I will be adding various restaurants to the site.  I will add factual information to the site.  As well putting information on the site including, where it is located, what the phone number is for the place, I will also be posting a little bit of information about each of the places as well as website to the home page for that restaurant.

Each restaurant will have its own mini paragraph.  They will also have a link in each mini paragraph. I will source each restaurant at the bottom of the Wikipedia article. There will be a total of 8 restaurants in all unless I decide to cut some of them.  I will have more than 5.

Descriptive Prompt

This character is ready to defeat her enemy.  My instincts tell me that shes one of the only girls in her battle group.  She wants to scratch out the eyes of her opponent.  When she is called to battle she will go and kick some butt!  She is ready to attack at any moment.  Angie, age 24, weight is about 105,  petite frame, dark hair and red eyes lives in a town with a few amount of women.  Her boots, white as white can be, shimmer in the light.  Her fingers are long and skinny, but she is every boys lady.  All the men in the town want her.  She will fight to see which man she will have. Her father wants her to marry soon, but she doesn't want to.  We'll see what happens.

Feb 3rd- Exploratory Writing for Wikipedia Entry

When I was thinking about this assignment, I was wondering which wiki page I should add to. I searched for things I knew about and I finally found a wiki site to add to. I would like to add various restaurants to the Morris Plains NJ wiki site.

There are no names of restaurants for Morris Plains. I am interesting in going to different restaurants and trying out different foods from each restaurant. I like to go to restaurants because it is fun, you can hang out and most importantly.... you don't have to cook!!!

2. Are you comfortable with downloading + installing software, troubleshooting software, and using help sites? yes.  I have downloaded files to my computer.

3.  If your computer "crashes" or gets a virus -- what resources do you have for help (friends count!)?   What would you do?  I have Macafee, and I run it once and a while, mainly when it tells me too. My friends' dad is good with computers, so i will talk to him. 

4.  Do you have reliable access to a computer at home (or work)? I have a laptop.

5. What browser and word processing programs do you have on your personal computer? I use google chrome. I use microsoft word and powerpoint.  

6. What kind of connection do you have (dial-up, DSL, cable, wideband, etc.) and how fast is it for downloading and uploading files? (or you can just describe how long it takes the Kean site to load if you are unfamiliar with the terminology)- cable and if I use optimum wifi, it is really fast. if I use our router, it is slow at time but generally faster than kean. Kean is slow.

7.  What kind of backup do you have for your files for school?  For your system software?-I have a USB.  here are some cute usb's from Staples!!!

Assuming you use email and that you get a large number of emails in a given day, how do you keep track of/organize the emails/files you want to keep?   I have a filing system. I have a folder for Kean semesters and under them are sub folders witht eh classes I am taking that semester.  my professors get a folder and every email i get from them go into their respected folders.  I also have a save folder for important documents.

9. Do you own a smartphone? If so, which one? (brand, model, os) -nope

10. Are you an avid texter? Do you use a number pad, mini keyboard, or touch screen to text? Yes, I text a lot.  I have a number pad and a mini keyboard.  I use both.  I also have an ipod touch that I text on.

I use google and type what I am looking for in the search box.  I also go on Kean's library site and look for information.  I use that site to look for books that are avaliable in the library and look for documents and journals.
